        Aren't there enough websites already? Sure, but maybe one more won't hurt, if it makes it easy for people interested in the classics, the humanities, and liberal education or higher education in general to find new information and ideas on these topics.

        For some years now, I have been sounding off on the website of the Teagle Foundation, where my essays, talks, and blog entries have been posted.  Even though I am now retired, the link to Teagle's website--and its work--remains a close one. But since there are other subjects that I want to explore, an independent home on the Internet seems in order.

        The website has four main parts:
        • ABOUT, where you can find a short bio and my CV.
        • SPEAKING, which has details on where I am lecturing and consulting.
        • WRITING, where you can access some of my published essays, draft essays, and full text of some recent talks.
        • RESOURCES, which includes short pieces with suggestions and resources for improving student learning, as well as links to organizations that might be helpful.

        As the site develops, you can expect to find:
        • Progress reports on the project, "Thinking Greek."
        • The story of my fictional friend, Susan Smith, the modal (not model) American Student.

        I hope there will be many fresh ideas and provocations on the site, but I also do want to do somethings that can make a difference in areas I care deeply about. So when I can, I want to be a resource to colleges and universities that are looking for systematic ways to improve their students' liberal education. This can be anything from a phone conversation, to a campus visit, seminar, lecture, or more extensive consultations. A preliminary exchange by email (
