Over the past few years, I have become more and more convinced of the transformative power of liberal education, the humanities and especially the ancient Greek and Roman classics. I have been trying not to repeat the old cliches on these topics but to focus on things that might most strengthen the study of these fields, -- the power of evidence to improve teaching as well as research, the need to make expectations and assumptions explicit, the clarifying force of narrative.
