NC update
Some while ago North Carolina’s governor, Pat McCrory, announced his plan to shift state support for the University of North Carolina toward more vocational education. (See the blog entry down below). Yesterday a petition with over 13,000 signers was delivered to him protesting this plan.
This was no slick PR operation, with well-paid consultants, trained managers and a squadron of door-to-door salesmen. Most of the work was done by one person who cared strongly about liberal education—Jen Job. She deserved applause and thanks. If you’d like to thank her, her email is "Jen Job" <[email protected]>,
Our governor is not the brightest pebble on the beach, but this may give him second thoughts, an exciting new experience for him, perhaps. Stay tuned.
This North Carolina operation has, I believe, wider significance. Support for the liberal arts and sciences is out there. Many people care. To be sure, the reasons they care need to be more strongly articulated and more widely heard. Many other people have to see why liberal education matters. But it’s a start, and a reason to feel confident that if such support can be mobilized in a short time in this state, it can be done elsewhere too.
